Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an island country in Central America, made up of two islands, in the Lesser Antilles. The capital city is Basseterre.

The territory is divided into the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The highest point is Mount Liamuiga (1156 m). Both islands are volcanic and they cointain the jungle in their mainland. Since the mainland areas are mountainous, most of the population lives on the coasts. Several rivers descend from the mountains and Saint Kitts also has a small lake.

The climate is tropical and hot all year round, cooled by breezes, even though summer is still very sultry. The rainiest period is from July to November, the driest from February to April. Rainfalls are basically storms and do not reduce sunshine that much. From June to November hurricanes are likely to form, especially from August to October.

Flora includes coconut palms, poincianas, palmettos, lemon trees, bougainvillea, hibiscus and tamarind. In the marshes of the southern part of St. Kitts island mangroves also grow. Fauna includes vervet monkeys, especially on Monkey Hill in St.Kitts. The rich coral reef is the perfect habitat for a large variety of marine species, such as turtles, barracudas, eels and rays.

Agriculture chiefly produces sugar and cotton, together with banana trees, coconut palms and fruit trees. Fishing also plays and important role, especially lobster fishing. Food industry, electronics and textile industry are also developed. Tourism is expanding and is the chief base of the economy.

During your stay in St.Kitts and Nevis you shouldn't miss Brimstone Hill Fortess National Park, on St. Kitts island and Unesco World Heritage Site, spectacular Circle Island Road, extending along St. Kitts' coast, the magnificent city of Charlestown in Nevis and finally, the stunning beaches, where you can practise all kinds of water activities and sports.
