British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory is a British Overseas Territory in the Indian Ocean. It includes six atolls of Chagos archipelago, made up of over a thousand islands of different size. The largest island is Diego Garcia, where an important Anglo-American military base is situated. Its inhabitants are mainly military personnel of the base.

The territory is made up of 55 islands and the main one, Diego Garcia, occupies around three quarters of it. The islands are flat and the climate is marine tropical; hot, humid and moderated by trade winds. Most of the ocean waters sorrounding the islands were declared marine reserve. With the exception of a two-lane motorway, the islands have no roads. On Diego Garcia transport is mostly by bicycle. The island also has a seaport and airport.

All economic activities are concentrated on the island of Diego Garcia. Around 2,000 native inhabitants, the Chagossians, were removed from the islands to Mauritius to allow the construction of the Anglo-American defensive facilities. The island of Diego Garcia, forbidden to media and tourism, is almost exclusively inhabited by military personnel from the Us, Great Britain, Mauritius and Philippines. There are no industrial or agricultural activities on the islands.
