Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia are an island nation with Palikir as a capital city, situated in Oceania in the Pacific Ocean. The states that make up the federation are Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The official language is English, but the various islands speak their own languages and dialects.

The archipelago of Micronesia is composed of 607 islands, most of which are atolls and a lesser part are volcanic islands. There are no mountains on the atolls, with the exception of some Chuuk islands. On Kosrae mounts Mntanti and Finkol are to be mentioned, while Yap hosts mount Tabiwol and Pohnpei mount Totolom. The few rivers are small and narrow: in Kosrae tiny rivers form Sipyen, Saolong and Cascade watrefalls, while in Pohnpei Nanpil river flows, originating Liduduhniap Twin waterfalls.

The climate is tropical, with heavy rainfalls all year round, and frequent typhoons from June to December. Flora includes coconut palms, banana trees and breadfruit. Fauna features bats and several species of sedentary birds, such as parrots, and many migratory birds. The coral reef hosts colorful fish, sea turtles, manta rays, sharks and whales.

Main economic activities are subsistence farming and fishing. The islands are not particularly rich in mineral deposits, with the exception of some phosphate deposits. Tourism finds it hard to thrive, due to the lack of structures and the geographical isolation of the archipleago. Main sources of income are contributions from the Usa.

During your stay or cruise in Micronesia, besides the stunning forests and coral reef, you shouldn't miss Nan Madol ruins in Pohnpei and Lelu and Menka ruins in Kosrae.
