Barbados

Barbados is an island and independent nation in the Lesser Antilles, on the border between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The island, whose capital city is Bridgetown, is mainly made up of limestone and, being situated in the tropical area, is constantly swept by equatorial winds. In the mainland plantations of sugar are common. The highest mountain, Mount Hillaby, only reaches 350 m above sea level.

As for climate, the dry season, from December to May, alternates with the wet season, from June to November, with heavier rainfalls away from the coasts. Most common plants are palm, equisetum, white cedar and carob tree. Anyway, the most famous tree is the bearded fig tree, from which the island derives its name. Fauna includes mammals introduced by the Europeans, such as mongoose, European hare, mouse and rat. Monkeys were brought as pets from Africa.

The only relevant reptile species is the non-poisonous grass snake. Non-poisonous blind snakes, lizards, frogs, red-footed tortoises and several species of bats can also be found here. Bird species are also plenty on the island.

Barbados boasts a develeped economy, guaranteeing inhabitants quite good standards of living. If in the past the island mainly supported itself thanks to sugar plantations, nowadays the manufacturing sector and tourism are predominant, also due to the renovation of hotels and houses. Barbados is also considered as a tax haven.
