Santa Cruz de la Palma

Santa Cruz de la Palma is the capital of the La Palma island, placed to the Canary Islands. The city is set in the eastern part of La Palma and it was built upon the lava flow of the volcano Caldereta.  Although Santa Cruz de la Palma faces the sea, the territory is very mountainous probably because of the volcan and because the city is placed inside the Caldereta boarder. The closeness among the sea and the volcan gives to the city many sloping streets full of staircases.

Historical buildings, architectures of the Renaissance and Baroques, many churches and holy places such as the church of El Salvador ,the sanctum of Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves and the Castle of Saint Catalina, the only stronghold survived to the time, are just few of the beautiful attractions of the island close to the Plaza de Espana. The aime of the castle was to protect Santa Cruz from the assaults that almost every year came from the sea.

The city is divided into two parts, the downtown and the suburbs. The harbor of the city is the only harbor of the island and for that reason Santa Cruz is considered the main trading center.
